I have broad experience and education in information technology, cyber security, the
Internet, the World Wide Web, personal computers, management, and education and training. As Associate Chair
of the Department of Information Teachnology and Management (ITM) at
Illinois Institute of Technology, I design and manage curriculum for ITM
undergraduate and graduate degrees; advise undergraduate and graduate students; direct and manage the
department staff; and evaluate and hire instructors for courses. I drafted the submissions and guided
department though program
accreditation by the Computer Accreditation Commission of ABET and
designation as a
National
Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security. I currently serve on several major faculty committees and am Chair of the
Undergraduate Studies Committee.
Until fall of 2016, I also served as the Director of Information Technology for the
School of Applied Technology at Illinois Tech.
I've been the Information Systems Administrator for a university department and for a Navy aviation
squadron with over 500 people, and I've managed a multimedia
center providing campus-wide multimedia computing support. As Client Services Manager for
Illinois Tech's Computing and Network Services (CNS) I managed a division responsible
for all CNS computer labs, Novell networks, the Helpdesk, and all technical and structural aspects of the
university's Web site. I've had wide experience with the World Wide Web and I have created and
maintained a large group of homepages, including pages for the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland,
for alumni of the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Naval and Maritime page of the World
Wide Web Virtual Library. I've been the Webmaster for multiple Web
servers at IIT and I was the direct line supervisor of the University
Webmaster. I created and coordinated the IIT
Internet Access program, providing Internet Education for students,
educators and business people and Internet access for community
groups and activities. Through this program I was responsible for
basic Internet education of over 1000 students, including 800 K-12
educators. As an outgrowth of this program, I was also the Program
Manager of IIT's Certificate Program in Educational Technology. In addition to instructing
Information Technology, I have taught Computer Science, Web Design for the e-Commerce
Masters program aand DIsaster Recovery for the Master of Public Administration program of
Illinois Tech's Stuart School of
Business, and I've taught e-Commerce
technology for the University of Chicago. Conversant with
DOS, Windows, Linux, UNIX and Amiga computers, I have extensive
conventional and computer graphics experience as well as formal
Navy training and experience in information security. I'm a 1977
graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy,
Annapolis, Maryland, and having earned a Master of Science in Systems
Management from the University of Denver
I was designated a Computer Systems Management Subspecialist by
the U. S. Navy. In addition to
academic and university computing duties, I have a consulting &
training practice focusing on Internet technologies, cyber security, and the World
Wide Web. This background, coupled with my years
of service as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, has provided
me with a unique perspective on the problems of managing and teaching
technology. My experience as a college professor as well as over
four years as Navy Flight Instructor has made me an expert in curriculum
development. Prior to my current positions with IIT, I was an Assistant
Professor of Naval Science at IIT. I'm a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the
Association of Information Technology Professionals, the
Information Systems Audit and Control Association, the
Internet Society, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers. I was a long-time member of the U.S. Naval Institute and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association.
I served on the Ad-Hoc Committee which drafted By-Laws for the World Wide Web Virtual Library and was a founding member of
the Council of that organization. I was a member of the Association of Internet Professionals Certification Accreditation Council
which defined accreditation standards for Internet training and educational programs on an international level and served as a
Subject Matter Expert for the CompTIA i-Net+ certification examination. I am a member of the Executive Committee of
the Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group in Information Technology Education (ACM SIGITE).
As a professional member of Gamma Nu Eta, the National Information Technology Honor Society, I serve as the Faculty Adviser of the ΓNH Beta
Chapter, and I am the Past Chair of the Gamma Nu Eta National Board of Directors.
